Florida: Severe Weather Warning

With hurricane season starting on June 1st its that time of year to make sure you have flood insurance.  Everyone who lives in Florida is in a flood zone and a flood can happen any season.  All it takes is a heavy rain to make rivers where there wasn't even a trickle before. The best way to cover yourself and recover from flooding is to have a flood policy.  Below is some statistics from the NFIP (national flood insurance program) regarding floods.

  • Over the past 10 years (2001-2010) the average flood insurance claim paid in the US was nearly $48,000 per year.
  • Over the past 10 years (2001-2010), flood insurance claims averaged just over $2.6 billion.
  • The average flood insurance policy is about $600 per year.
  • People outside of high-risk areas file over 20% of NFIP claims and receive one-third of disaster assistance for flooding.
